Opening Of New Hamworthy Library

The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Charles Meachin, will officially open the new Hamworthy Community Library on Saturday 6 March.

The new community library opens its doors at 10am when the Mayor will cut the ribbon with the assistance of special guests Wallace and Gromit.

To help celebrate this special occasion a variety of guests will be taking part throughout the day. As well as Wallace and Gromit these include Neal Butterworth, Editor in Chief of the Daily Echo, local author Alan Burridge, children's author and illustrator Shoo Rayner and popular author Catrin Collier.

Various events will be taking place throughout the day including make friends with a book, make a bookmark, and face painting for children. Everyone is welcome and no prior booking is needed.

Live music will be provided by Carter Community College students.

Refreshments will be available from the Book Bites cafe which will be run by the cafe group from the local community. The group is made up of volunteers and will serve light meals, snacks and drinks.

The new library has wonderful facilities for the local community to use and enjoy including a multi-purpose meeting room complete with an automatic projector which plays television or DVDs on a 9ft screen. The media room will provide people with an opportunity to make and record their own music as well as create podcasts. TV screens in the new library provide an opportunity for local groups and organisations to promote their services as well as 24-hour news. Stock has increased by 25% seeing shelves filled with around 10,000 books, DVDs and spoken word CDs.

The new building will be run in partnership with Hamworthy Children's Centre who will be providing many of their services from the library.

Cllr Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Borough of Poole, said: "The new Community Library provides the residents of Hamworthy with a great facility which can be enjoyed by everyone. Staff have worked extremely hard to ensure this project is completed on time and on budget and we look forward to welcoming people on 6 March at the official opening."

Hamworthy Community Library is jointly funded by Big Lottery, Surestart and Borough of Poole. The new library will open Monday - Friday between 9.30am and 5pm and Saturdays between 10am and 1pm.
