Subway Transformed into Work of Art

Young people from the Alderney West Youth Club transformed a grey and dreary subway into a bright and welcoming space.

The youth club opened on July 30 after the Alderney and Rossmore Safer Neighbourhood Team acknowledged the need for facilities for young people in the area.

Local residents Sue Long, Bob Peachey and Louise Pearson have helped organise and run the youth club to ensure its continued success.

Many activities are on offer at the club including football, table tennis, music, computer games and pool. The youth club also wants to provide young people with the opportunity to get involved in projects to support the community.

Tony Parfett from Borough of Poole's Transportation Services led the subway project with help from PC Gavin Haynes from the Rossmore and Alderney Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Cllr Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Borough of Poole, said: "We fully support the use of organised youth clubs across Poole and are delighted that the club in Alderney is proving a success. It gives young people in the area an opportunity to get involved and make a difference to their community. The club also provides a safe and suitable environment for young people to socialise and have fun."

Lisa Marie Barrett from Borough of Poole's Personnel Services volunteered to share her passion for arts and crafts with the young people at the club. Lisa accompanied by her arts kit complete with glitter, beads, buttons and fabrics provided the young people with a fantastic opportunity to have fun and be creative.

Marie Stopford, Community Liaison Officer, Borough of Poole said: "We want to provide a wide variety of activities to attract as many young people to the club as possible. We are also keen to provide them with the opportunity to give back to their community and make a difference in their local area. We would like to thank all the people that have volunteered their time and shared their skills, as without them the youth club would not be possible."

The youth club is open every Wednesday night from 7pm to 9.30pm at Alderney West Community Centre, Bedford Road South and welcomes young people aged between 11 and 16.
