14 Sep 07Cigarette Litter Campaign Continues
Borough of Poole and Bournemouth Borough Council
are among ten local authorities taking part in a national campaign throughout September to stamp out cigarette litter.
As part of the campaign, three different designs of posters will appear across Bournemouth and Poole. These will be displayed on bus shelters, phone booths, etc.
As well as the posters, both councils will be holding awareness days, which will include the distribution of portable ash trays. They will also be encouraging businesses to back the campaign.
Borough of Poole will be holding their awareness days in the High Street; Monday 17 September outside Burger King, Thursday 20 September near Sainsbury's and Monday 24 September at various locations throughout the Borough.
Following the campaign, Borough of Poole will be resuming enforcement exercises where officers will be issuing Fixed Penalty Notices to people who discard their cigarette butts as litter.
Borough of Poole has installed "stub plates" on a number of bins in the High Street and along the Quay, with a further 300 new bins with stub plates being installed across the Borough.
Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "It is great to be part of such a big national campaign. I really hope smokers who live, work and visit Poole take heed of the message and deal with their cigarette rubbish responsibly. Poole spends over £1 million keeping the streets clean. Any additional littering only increases the cost to the council tax payer."
Bournemouth Borough Council's awareness days will take place in the Town Centre on Monday 17 and Saturday 22 September and in Boscombe on Wednesday 19 September.
Bournemouth Borough Council will be running a high profile advertising campaign on lamppost banners and telephone kiosks and giving away promotional material in pubs and clubs. Special bins have also been installed around the Borough for smokers to dispose of their cigarette butts. In addition, anyone spotted dropping smoking related litter will receive a £75 Fixed Penalty Notice.
Cllr Robert Lawton, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment & Transport, Bournemouth Borough Council, said: "Bournemouth Council is delighted to have been chosen as one of the ten local authorities taking part in this campaign. Smoking related debris is filthy and unpleasant and the Council takes the disposal of cigarette related litter very seriously to avoid spoiling the environment for all those who live and work in the town."
Ginette Unsworth, Senior Marketing Manager, Keep Britain Tidy
, said: "Cigarette litter has been a persistent problem for the past few years. It's important that we offer smokers a suitable way to dispose of their cigarette ends."
