The Nature Reserve at Branksome Dene Chine consists of approximately 5.25 hectares (13 acres) of steep sided, wooded valleys and ridges.

The woodland includes a number of tree species, although much of the shrub layer is dominated by dense stands of rhododendron and laurel. Small areas of remnant heathland are present. Much of the rhododendron and other invasive shrubs have now been removed.

This is the largest semi-natural area on the Poole Bay Cliffs wildlife corridor. The cliff is a geological Site of Scientific Interest, featuring a plant bed and large exposures showing river valley development.
