ALERT 12th February 2008 - Blue Tongue
Following confirmation of Blue Tongue at a farm in Dorset, Poole is now in a Protection Zone. This places restrictions on the movement of cattle, sheep, goats and deer. Livestock movements are still allowed but keepers must comply with certain conditions.
Blue Tongue DOES NOT affect humans and there are no public health implications.

General
There is a wide range of legislation in the UK designed to protect the health and welfare of both domesticated and wild animals.
Animal health and welfare legislation is enforced jointly by the Local Authority and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
(DEFRA), in association with other government bodies and independent organisations like the RSPCA
What we licence and enforce
Licensing of:
- horse riding establishments

- dog breeding establishments

- animal boarding establishments
- in conjunction with DEFRA 
- dangerous wild animals

- animal movements

- pet shops

- zoos (no zoos in Poole at present)
Enforcement of animal health legislation relating to:
- control of animal diseases
- standards of human health
- quality of food
- quality of livestock
- welfare of animals at farms, markets, slaughterhouses

Other animal welfare activities
Livestock / Farm animals
ECPS helps to promote and protect the health and welfare of livestock. The service plays a role in policing the livestock industry in the Borough which includes monitoring the disease and welfare on farms and smallholdings (including pet livestock such as goats/chickens) and of animals in transit, including those being imported and exported through Poole port.
We work in close co-operation with other agencies including the State Veterinary Service and Defra
