Our Mission Statement

To provide the public and healthcare professionals in Dorset, with free, confidential, up to date and reliable health information in an easily accessible format. 

Based in Poole Central Library, we have been providing free, confidential, consumer-based health information direct to the people of Dorset for 21 years. For 6 years we also provided information via our role as the Dorset arm of NHS Direct West Country’s Health Information Service, until a major NHS restructuring exercise in Spring 2007.

Now funded by NHS Bournemouth and Poole and the Borough of Poole and Dorset Social Services, we work with all agencies across geographical Dorset committed to providing accurate and appropriate health information to the public.

Healthpoint has an up-to-date reference/study collection of books, magazines, fact sheets, leaflets, videos, DVDs and CDs and offers a one-stop shop for patient health information. Our Centre is open Monday-Friday 9.30am-5pm and Saturday 9am-1pm. We're happy to help you look for the answers to your questions, leave you to research alone if you prefer, or take details and post the information out to you if you are short of time on the day.

We all have many years experience in researching health information and will try and tackle any enquiry on a health/disability related issue, but we aren't able to provide medical advice or counselling as we aren't trained in those areas. If we think you need a medical opinion we'll suggest your speak to your own GP or a nurse on the NHS Direct team - 0845 46 47.

If we can't find the answer to your query, then we will consult with our colleagues in the wider NHS community to see if we can find someone else for you to talk to, or who can provide the answer to pass on to you.
